Cosmos Flowers in Johannesburg
Every year from mid March until Mid April, Delta Park in Johannesburg blooms into a cosmos field wonderland. It's a fantastic setting to capture dreamy portraits of couples, family, friends, siblings and the dogs. Taking photos of people in such a enchanting flower field in the middle of Jozi city is something truly spectacular. My lifestyle photography creates a space for people to relax, connect and have fun. I chat, interact, direct and pose you a bit, we make jokes and somewhere in the middle of it all, I take photos without you really even noticing. The result is really just gorgeous images that you can frame keep as a reminder of a special life stage with your loved ones.
Lifestyle outdoor shoots at Delta Park in Johannesburg is a mix of traditional and documentary photography. The photos are still curated to some extent and there are most definitely authentic and genuine moments and movements being captured. Lifestyle photography is a bit more about choosing outfits, venue and colours with more care and consideration. This is to make sure that the end product is visually appealing and conveys a certain mood, look and vibe. In some cases I'll edit out small blemishes and distractions in the background, however my editing will always stay true to the colours and the reality of the day.
Tips for Photographing Cosmos at Delta Park
- Get over there before the end of March or early April at the latest, I usually advertise for Cosmos family portraits and these session time slots book up so fast.
- The biggest concentration of flowers is where the Parkrun starts. I find parking at 74 Bantam road in the street there is easy access to a pedestrian gate. and you’ll see the cosmos there.
- Sometimes the ground is quite soggy in some spots due to the summer rain. So comfy shoes, barefoot or gumboots can be fun.
- I enjoy shooting between 16:00 - 18:00 usually and the light was perfect. however, March can be overcast, so then there's opportunity to shoot at any time.
- Delta Park is a great spot to hang out, lots of people go for walks, ride their bikes and take the dogs out to run. I've never had an issue with security, but it's important to be always vigilant.
- For outfits I suggest soft colours that ties in with the colours of the flowers. It doesn't have to be all pink, purple and white. Hues of blues and green also works well. I'd stay away from deep and dark colours like black, red and navy, while it's striking for other shoots, it won't compliment the flower season that well.
- Have fun, be playful, bring a basket to pick flowers to take home.
- Lastly, if anyone is allergic to bees, be extra careful, these friendly ones love the flowers too!
